WV6055 : The Devil

The Devil
The Devil
The Devils Hole (La Touraille) is a chasm formed by the collapse of a sea cave on the coast at La Falaise. The association with the Devil only dates from the 19th century. Prior to that it was known as ‘Le Creux de la Touraille’ or Spiral Cave.

Following a shipwreck in 1851, a ship's figurehead featuring the devil was washed up on the coast nearby. Since then a succession of statues of the devil have been erected at or near the spot to perpetuate the story. Today's metal replica of the devil stands in a pool on the way down to the coast, to lend atmosphere to the winding path.
